Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Child labor remains a pressing social issue in Nigeria, with many children engaged in exploitative work that deprives them of education, health, and basic rights. Print media plays a pivotal role in raising awareness about child labor, advocating for policy changes, and mobilizing public action to address this issue (Bello & Adekunle, 2024). In Minna Local Government, Niger State, newspapers and magazines have been used to highlight the prevalence of child labor, its socio-economic causes, and the need for collective intervention. Through investigative reporting, feature stories, and public service announcements, print media campaigns aim to inform stakeholders and inspire action against child labor (Oluwole et al., 2023). Despite these efforts, the impact of such campaigns is often constrained by challenges like limited reach, inconsistent messaging, and low literacy levels among target audiences. This study analyzes the effectiveness of print media campaigns against child labor in Minna Local Government, assessing their impact and proposing strategies for improvement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Child labor continues to thrive in Minna Local Government, despite ongoing campaigns by government agencies, NGOs, and media organizations. While print media has been actively involved in addressing this issue, its effectiveness in influencing public attitudes and behaviors remains unclear. This study seeks to bridge this gap by evaluating the successes and limitations of print media campaigns against child labor in Minna Local Government.

By evaluating the role of print media in addressing this issue, the research provides valuable insights into effective campaign strategies and highlights areas for improvement. The findings also contribute to academic discourse on media and child rights, offering a localized perspective from Minna Local Government.
