Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Local newspapers play a significant role in conflict resolution by providing a platform for dialogue, disseminating accurate information, and promoting peace initiatives. In Lafia Local Government, Nasarawa State, local newspapers have been pivotal in addressing communal conflicts by fostering communication among conflicting parties, highlighting grievances, and advocating for peaceful coexistence (Abdullahi & Musa, 2024). Through investigative reporting and balanced narratives, these newspapers contribute to de-escalating tensions and promoting understanding (Garba & Ahmed, 2023). They also serve as watchdogs, holding authorities accountable for addressing underlying causes of conflict. However, the effectiveness of local newspapers in conflict resolution depends on their ability to remain unbiased, maintain credibility, and operate amidst resource constraints. This study investigates the role of local newspapers in resolving conflicts in Lafia, with a focus on their contributions, challenges, and potential for greater impact.
