Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a pervasive issue in many parts of Nigeria, affecting women and girls disproportionately and undermining their rights, dignity, and well-being. In Kankia Local Government, Katsina State, the prevalence of GBV poses a significant challenge to achieving gender equality and social cohesion. Print media has historically been a powerful tool for advocacy, education, and social change, offering a platform to campaign against GBV through public awareness, education, and advocacy (Garba & Musa, 2024). By publishing articles, editorials, and reports, newspapers highlight the impact of GBV, advocate for policy changes, and mobilize communities to take action (Ahmed & Bello, 2023). The effectiveness of print media in addressing GBV lies in its ability to reach diverse audiences, challenge harmful cultural norms, and promote dialogue on sensitive issues. This study examines the role of print media in campaigning against GBV in Kankia, focusing on its impact on awareness, attitudes, and behavior change.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite ongoing campaigns against GBV, the issue persists in Kankia Local Government, raising questions about the effectiveness of existing interventions. Print media, while instrumental in advocacy efforts, faces challenges such as limited reach, cultural resistance, and competition from digital platforms, which may undermine its impact (Bello & Yusuf, 2023). Additionally, the extent to which print media influences community perceptions and actions against GBV remains unclear. This study investigates the effectiveness of print media in campaigning against GBV, identifying its strengths and limitations in fostering social change.

1. How effective is print media in raising awareness about GBV in Kankia Local Government?
2. What role does print media play in changing attitudes and behaviors toward GBV?
3. What strategies can enhance the effectiveness of print media campaigns against GBV?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1. Print media significantly raises awareness about GBV in Kankia Local Government.
2. Print media positively influences attitudes and behaviors toward reducing GBV.
3. Improved content, reach, and community engagement can enhance the effectiveness of print media campaigns against GBV.
1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings will benefit media practitioners, policymakers, and advocacy organizations by providing insights into the strengths and limitations of print media campaigns. By offering practical recommendations, the study aims to enhance the role of print media in fostering a society free from GBV and promoting gender equality.
