Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Newspaper readership has seen a significant decline globally, particularly among younger audiences, as digital media platforms have become the primary source of news and information. In Minna Local Government, Niger State, this decline is particularly noticeable, with many youths turning to social media, online news outlets, and instant messaging services for real-time updates (Garba & Musa, 2024). This shift in media consumption patterns can be attributed to the increasing accessibility of the internet, mobile phones, and other digital devices, which offer a more interactive and engaging experience compared to traditional print media (Ahmed & Bello, 2023). The decline in newspaper readership among youths is concerning, as newspapers have historically played a crucial role in shaping public opinion, educating the populace, and fostering civic engagement (Abubakar & Ibrahim, 2025). This study explores the factors contributing to this decline and assesses the implications for the future of print media in Minna, focusing on the role newspapers play in informing, educating, and empowering young people.

Moreover, the shift toward digital media may undermine the potential for newspapers to contribute to social and political discourse in Minna.
