Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The role of female journalists in print media is increasingly recognized as pivotal in promoting diversity, equity, and representation in the journalism profession. Despite this, female journalists face a myriad of challenges, particularly in patriarchal societies like Katsina Local Government, Katsina State. These challenges include gender discrimination, workplace harassment, limited opportunities for career advancement, and societal stereotypes about women in leadership positions (Garba & Musa, 2024). Female journalists often struggle to balance their professional responsibilities with cultural expectations, such as traditional domestic roles (Abubakar & Ibrahim, 2023). The situation is exacerbated by a lack of institutional support and gender-sensitive policies in many print media organizations (Ahmed & Bello, 2023). This study explores these challenges, providing insights into their implications for gender equity and the broader journalism profession.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing participation of women in journalism, female journalists in Katsina face systemic challenges that hinder their career growth and ability to perform effectively. Issues such as unequal pay, limited mentorship opportunities, and a lack of representation in decision-making positions persist (Bello & Yusuf, 2024). Additionally, cultural and societal norms often discourage women from pursuing journalism, particularly in areas considered controversial or investigative. These challenges not only affect the well-being and career progression of female journalists but also limit the diversity of perspectives in print media reporting. Addressing these issues is crucial for fostering an inclusive media landscape in Katsina Local Government.
