Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Sabon Gari Local Government Area in Kaduna State is home to a diverse population comprising different religious and ethnic groups, including Christians, Muslims, and indigenous beliefs. While this diversity can be a source of strength, it also presents challenges, especially with regard to interfaith relations. Tensions between religious groups have, at times, led to conflicts and social division. Development communication, which focuses on using communication tools and strategies to foster understanding, peace, and social cohesion, has been recognized as an effective method to address these challenges. By using media campaigns, community dialogues, and other communication strategies, development communication can promote interfaith harmony and understanding, mitigate religious tensions, and encourage peaceful coexistence among diverse groups (Ali & Ibrahim, 2023). This study seeks to examine how development communication strategies have been employed in Sabon Gari to promote interfaith dialogue and harmony, as well as their effectiveness in reducing religious conflicts.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts from government agencies, religious organizations, and civil society groups to promote peace and harmony, interfaith tensions and conflicts persist in Sabon Gari. This is largely due to deep-rooted prejudices, miscommunication, and misunderstandings between different religious groups. Although development communication strategies have been utilized in other regions to promote interfaith peace, their application and effectiveness in Sabon Gari remain underexplored. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the role of development communication in fostering interfaith harmony and identifying the challenges that hinder the success of these strategies in Sabon Gari.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of development communication in promoting interfaith harmony in Sabon Gari Local Government Area.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies in reducing interfaith conflicts and promoting peaceful coexistence.

  3. To identify the challenges faced in using development communication to foster interfaith harmony in Sabon Gari.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How has development communication been used to promote interfaith harmony in Sabon Gari?

  2. What is the effectiveness of communication strategies in reducing interfaith tensions and conflicts in Sabon Gari?

  3. What are the challenges faced in promoting interfaith harmony through development communication in Sabon Gari?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Development communication strategies have a significant impact on promoting interfaith harmony in Sabon Gari.

  2. Communication strategies are effective in reducing interfaith conflicts in Sabon Gari.

  3. Resistance from religious groups and inadequate media resources hinder the success of development communication strategies in fostering interfaith harmony.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to understanding how development communication can be used as a tool for promoting interfaith peace and harmony. The findings will help policymakers, religious leaders, and development practitioners improve the strategies employed in fostering peaceful coexistence in multi-religious communities. The study will also add to the body of knowledge on the role of communication in conflict resolution and social cohesion.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Sabon Gari Local Government Area, Kaduna State, and will be limited to the use of development communication in promoting interfaith harmony. Limitations include potential biases in data collection, as sensitive topics related to religious differences may affect the willingness of some individuals to participate fully in the study.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Development Communication: A strategic use of communication tools, such as media campaigns and community engagement, to foster social change and development.

  2. Interfaith Harmony: Peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding between people of different religious faiths.
