Background of the Study

In health crises, such as disease outbreaks or pandemics, the rapid spread of misinformation and fake news exacerbates public anxiety and hampers effective crisis management. Maiduguri Local Government Area, being a key location in Borno State, has faced unique challenges in health communication, compounded by insurgency and limited access to verified information sources. Development communication plays a critical role in countering fake news by promoting accurate health information, encouraging media literacy, and leveraging trusted communication channels to enhance community resilience during crises.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The proliferation of fake news during health crises undermines trust in health interventions, leading to poor compliance with public health guidelines and worsening health outcomes in Maiduguri. Despite some efforts to curb misinformation, gaps in effective communication strategies persist. This study evaluates the role of development communication in addressing fake news during health crises in Maiduguri.
