Background of the Study

Hepatitis B remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, contributing to chronic liver diseases and mortality. The disease is highly preventable through vaccination and public awareness; however, knowledge gaps and misconceptions about its transmission and prevention persist, particularly in underserved communities such as Yola North Local Government Area (LGA) in Adamawa State. Development communication plays an essential role in tackling this challenge by promoting awareness, behavioral change, and access to healthcare services. Research shows that community-based campaigns, interactive media, and culturally relevant messaging significantly enhance public understanding of Hepatitis B and improve health-seeking behavior (Adeola & Ibrahim, 2023). This study examines how development communication strategies can effectively address Hepatitis B awareness in Yola North LGA, leveraging participatory approaches and locally adapted communication tools.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of vaccines and treatment, the prevalence of Hepatitis B remains high in many Nigerian communities, including Yola North LGA. Factors such as limited public awareness, cultural misconceptions, and inadequate health communication strategies contribute to the low uptake of preventive measures and treatment. Many residents lack accurate information about Hepatitis B transmission, often associating it with stigma or myths. Addressing these issues through targeted development communication strategies is critical to improving awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting vaccination and early treatment in the community (Nwachukwu et al., 2024).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current level of Hepatitis B awareness in Yola North LGA.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of development communication strategies in promoting awareness and preventive practices.

  3. To recommend communication approaches for enhancing Hepatitis B awareness and healthcare utilization.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What is the current level of Hepatitis B awareness in Yola North LGA?

  2. How effective are development communication strategies in promoting awareness and prevention?

  3. What communication approaches can improve Hepatitis B awareness and healthcare utilization?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Development communication significantly improves awareness of Hepatitis B in Yola North LGA.

  2. Community-based communication strategies enhance the adoption of preventive practices.

  3. Culturally adapted messaging reduces stigma associated with Hepatitis B.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will contribute to public health efforts by demonstrating the value of development communication in tackling Hepatitis B awareness. It will provide practical insights for policymakers, healthcare providers, and communication practitioners in designing effective health campaigns. By addressing knowledge gaps and promoting preventive behavior, the study aims to reduce the prevalence and impact of Hepatitis B in Yola North LGA and beyond.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the role of development communication in tackling Hepatitis B awareness within Yola North LGA, Adamawa State. It examines existing communication strategies, evaluates their effectiveness, and proposes improvements. Limitations may include challenges in accessing detailed health data or reaching marginalized groups.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Hepatitis B: A viral infection affecting the liver, preventable through vaccination and safe practices.

  2. Development Communication: Strategic use of communication to promote public health awareness and behavioral change.

  3. Yola North Local Government Area: A region in Adamawa State, Nigeria, targeted for this study due to its health challenges.
