Background of the Study

Plastic waste pollution has become a critical environmental issue in Lokoja Local Government Area (LGA), Kogi State, exacerbated by rapid urbanization, population growth, and inadequate waste management systems. Plastic pollution affects the environment, clogging waterways, reducing soil fertility, and endangering aquatic ecosystems. Development communication, a strategic tool for fostering behavioral change and promoting sustainable practices, is essential for addressing this challenge. By utilizing radio programs, social media campaigns, and community workshops, development communication can create awareness about the dangers of plastic waste, encourage waste reduction, and advocate for recycling and proper disposal practices. Recent research emphasizes the importance of participatory communication approaches that involve community members in designing and implementing waste management initiatives (Abubakar, 2024). This study assesses how development communication has influenced behaviors related to plastic waste management in Lokoja LGA, exploring its effectiveness and areas for improvement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The increasing accumulation of plastic waste in Lokoja LGA poses significant threats to the environment and public health. Despite various government and non-governmental efforts, the challenge persists due to a lack of awareness, poor enforcement of waste management policies, and limited community participation. Development communication has the potential to bridge these gaps by fostering public awareness and encouraging sustainable waste management practices. However, the impact of these communication efforts remains underexplored, making it difficult to identify effective strategies or areas requiring further intervention. This study seeks to evaluate the role of development communication in reducing plastic waste pollution in Lokoja LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of development communication strategies in reducing plastic waste pollution in Lokoja LGA.

  2. To identify barriers to effective plastic waste management practices in Lokoja LGA.

  3. To recommend communication strategies for enhancing community engagement in plastic waste reduction initiatives.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How effective are current development communication strategies in addressing plastic waste pollution in Lokoja LGA?

  2. What are the main challenges to effective plastic waste management in Lokoja LGA?

  3. What communication strategies can enhance community involvement in reducing plastic waste in Lokoja LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Development communication strategies significantly influence plastic waste management practices in Lokoja LGA.

  2. Lack of awareness and community participation are key barriers to addressing plastic waste pollution in Lokoja LGA.

  3. Participatory communication approaches can significantly enhance community engagement in plastic waste reduction efforts in Lokoja LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in understanding the role of communication in tackling environmental challenges, particularly plastic waste pollution. The findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers, environmental organizations, and community leaders to design and implement effective communication strategies. By promoting sustainable practices and increasing public awareness, this research can contribute to reducing plastic pollution, improving environmental health, and fostering a cleaner Lokoja LGA.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the impact of development communication on plastic waste management in Lokoja LGA, Kogi State. It examines communication campaigns, community engagement programs, and media strategies used within the area. Limitations may include restricted access to data from informal waste management actors and the influence of external factors such as economic constraints.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Plastic Waste Pollution: The accumulation of discarded plastic materials in the environment, leading to harmful ecological and health impacts.

  2. Development Communication: The strategic use of communication tools and techniques to promote sustainable practices and behavioral change.

  3. Lokoja Local Government Area: A region in Kogi State, Nigeria, experiencing significant environmental challenges due to plastic waste pollution.
