Background of the Study

Agricultural productivity in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas like Nguru Local Government Area (LGA) in Yobe State, plays a significant role in the economy, as agriculture remains the backbone of rural livelihoods. Smallholder farmers in Nguru LGA are key contributors to food production, yet they face numerous challenges that hinder their productivity, including inadequate access to information about modern farming practices, climate change adaptation, and financial resources. Development communication strategies have the potential to address these challenges by disseminating knowledge, facilitating knowledge exchange, and promoting best practices among farmers. Effective communication can equip farmers with the necessary tools to improve yields, manage resources sustainably, and adapt to changing environmental conditions. Through community radio programs, agricultural extension services, mobile technology, and other communication platforms, development communication can enhance smallholder farmers' understanding of agricultural techniques, market access, and government policies that affect the sector (Aliyu, 2023). This study aims to explore the role of communication in enhancing agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers in Nguru LGA, with a focus on how communication strategies can lead to improved agricultural outcomes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Nguru LGA, smallholder farmers continue to face low agricultural productivity due to a lack of access to timely and accurate information on modern farming techniques, pest management, soil health, and market trends. Despite the availability of development communication initiatives like agricultural extension services, radio broadcasts, and mobile platforms, many farmers remain disconnected from these valuable resources. This gap in access to information impedes their ability to implement best practices, access government programs, and respond effectively to challenges like climate change. As a result, agricultural productivity remains below its potential. Therefore, this study seeks to assess the impact of communication on agricultural productivity and explore the most effective strategies for disseminating agricultural knowledge to smallholder farmers in Nguru LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of communication on agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers in Nguru LGA.

  2. To examine the communication strategies used to promote modern farming techniques in Nguru LGA.

  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities in improving agricultural productivity through communication in Nguru LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does communication impact agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers in Nguru LGA?

  2. What communication strategies are most effective in promoting modern farming practices in Nguru LGA?

  3. What are the key challenges and opportunities for improving agricultural productivity through communication in Nguru LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant positive relationship between communication and agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers in Nguru LGA.

  2. Agricultural extension services and radio programs positively influence the adoption of modern farming practices in Nguru LGA.

  3. Communication challenges, such as limited access to technology, hinder the effectiveness of agricultural productivity campaigns in Nguru LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it will provide insights into how communication can enhance agricultural productivity in rural communities. The findings will inform policymakers, development organizations, and agricultural stakeholders on the effectiveness of communication strategies in improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. By identifying the most successful communication methods and platforms, the study will contribute to the design of more effective agricultural communication campaigns that increase productivity and promote sustainable farming practices in rural Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on Nguru LGA in Yobe State, specifically looking at how communication strategies influence smallholder farmers' agricultural productivity. The study may be limited by challenges in accessing comprehensive data on agricultural output and the difficulty in isolating the direct impact of communication strategies on productivity due to external factors like weather conditions and market fluctuations.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Agricultural Productivity: The measure of agricultural output per unit of input, such as land, labor, or capital, reflecting the efficiency and effectiveness of farming practices.

  2. Development Communication: The strategic use of communication tools to promote social change, knowledge dissemination, and participation in development programs, including those related to agriculture.

  3. Smallholder Farmers: Farmers who operate on small plots of land, typically for subsistence or local market purposes, and often face resource constraints and limited access to modern farming tools and techniques.
