Background of the Study

Health disparities in Nigeria are often influenced by cultural barriers, including traditional beliefs, taboos, and practices that hinder access to modern healthcare. In Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State, these barriers manifest in behaviors such as reliance on traditional healers, resistance to vaccination, and misconceptions about certain medical procedures. Development communication, through culturally sensitive approaches, plays a critical role in addressing these challenges by promoting health awareness, encouraging behavioral change, and fostering trust in healthcare systems. Strategies such as community radio programs, participatory health campaigns, and interpersonal communication have proven effective in bridging the gap between modern healthcare and traditional practices (Ibrahim & Ahmed, 2023). This study examines the impact of development communication in addressing cultural barriers to health in Zaria LGA, focusing on its effectiveness in changing perceptions and improving healthcare access.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Cultural barriers to health remain a significant challenge in Zaria LGA, contributing to low healthcare utilization, poor health outcomes, and the persistence of preventable diseases. Despite efforts by healthcare providers, deeply rooted beliefs and misinformation continue to impede progress. For instance, myths about vaccines and mistrust of modern medicine prevent many residents from seeking necessary care (Yusuf et al., 2024). Development communication initiatives, although present, often lack cultural specificity and fail to engage communities effectively. This study explores how development communication can address these barriers, promote health-seeking behaviors, and enhance healthcare delivery in Zaria LGA.

  2. To identify the challenges faced in implementing culturally sensitive communication strategies.

  3. To assess the impact of development communication on health awareness and behavior change.
