Background of the Study

Electoral conflict is a recurring challenge in Nigeria’s political landscape, with significant implications for democratic stability and social cohesion. In Katsina-Ala Local Government Area (LGA), Benue State, electoral conflicts have been fueled by political rivalry, ethnic tensions, misinformation, and inadequate communication between stakeholders. Development communication serves as a vital tool in preventing electoral conflicts by promoting dialogue, disseminating accurate information, and fostering peaceful coexistence. Communication strategies such as peacebuilding campaigns, voter education programs, and community forums have proven effective in mitigating electoral violence and ensuring transparent electoral processes (Okafor & Musa, 2023). This study examines how development communication can be employed to prevent electoral conflicts in Katsina-Ala LGA, focusing on its role in addressing misinformation, promoting civic education, and fostering stakeholder collaboration.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite ongoing efforts to ensure peaceful elections, Katsina-Ala LGA has experienced episodes of electoral conflict, characterized by violence, voter intimidation, and disputes over election outcomes. These conflicts are often exacerbated by misinformation, ethnic polarization, and weak communication between political actors and the electorate. The lack of effective development communication strategies further complicates efforts to prevent electoral violence, leaving communities vulnerable to political instability (Yusuf et al., 2024). This study explores the use of development communication in addressing these challenges, identifying effective approaches for conflict prevention in Katsina-Ala LGA.
