Background of the Study
Corruption remains a major impediment to sustainable development in Nigeria, eroding public trust, hindering economic growth, and undermining democratic governance. In Jalingo Local Government Area (LGA), Taraba State, corruption impacts public service delivery, resource allocation, and institutional effectiveness. Development communication plays a pivotal role in advocating for anti-corruption practices by fostering public awareness, mobilizing collective action, and promoting transparency and accountability. Tools such as community radio programs, social media campaigns, and grassroots advocacy have proven effective in challenging corrupt practices and empowering citizens to demand ethical governance (Ahmed et al., 2024). By employing participatory communication approaches, development communication can create an informed and active citizenry, reduce tolerance for corruption, and strengthen institutional mechanisms for accountability.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Corruption remains deeply entrenched in many local government structures, including Jalingo LGA, with far-reaching consequences for development. Despite existing anti-corruption initiatives, the lack of effective communication strategies has limited public understanding of corruption and its implications, reducing citizens' willingness to report and challenge corrupt practices (Bello & Yusuf, 2025). Communication gaps also hinder the ability of civil society organizations and local governments to engage effectively with communities in anti-corruption advocacy. This study evaluates the role of development communication in advocating for anti-corruption practices in Jalingo LGA, focusing on its impact on public awareness, community engagement, and institutional accountability.
