Background of the Study
Desertification is a major environmental challenge facing many regions in northern Nigeria, including Nguru Local Government Area (LGA), Yobe State. This phenomenon, caused by factors such as unsustainable land use practices, deforestation, and climate change, has severely impacted agriculture, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of rural communities (Bello & Musa, 2024). Development communication has emerged as a powerful tool in addressing environmental challenges, with an emphasis on raising awareness, promoting sustainable land management practices, and fostering community participation (Yusuf et al., 2025). Effective communication strategies—such as community-based outreach, radio programs, and participatory campaigns—are essential for combating desertification by educating local communities on the importance of reforestation, soil conservation, and sustainable farming practices (Ahmed & Bello, 2023). This study examines the role of development communication in desertification control in Nguru LGA, exploring its effectiveness in changing attitudes and behaviors related to land use and environmental protection.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Nguru LGA, like many parts of northern Nigeria, is experiencing severe desertification, which has led to the degradation of arable land and a decrease in agricultural productivity. While there are ongoing efforts to mitigate desertification, the effectiveness of development communication in addressing this challenge remains under-explored. Previous initiatives have struggled with limited community engagement, inadequate communication strategies, and lack of local involvement in decision-making processes (Okafor et al., 2024). This study aims to evaluate the role of development communication in controlling desertification, identifying the most effective strategies for raising awareness, promoting sustainable land use practices, and ensuring long-term environmental resilience.

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study contributes to the broader discourse on environmental communication and desertification control by assessing the role of development communication in addressing one of the most pressing environmental challenges in northern Nigeria. The findings will provide policymakers, environmental organizations, and development practitioners with insights into the most effective communication strategies for mitigating desertification. Additionally, it will highlight the importance of community-based approaches to environmental education and sustainable land management.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Nguru Local Government Area, Yobe State, focusing on the impact of development communication on desertification control. It does not extend to other areas in Yobe State or the broader region.
