Background of the Study

Social media has become a critical tool for development communication, offering unparalleled reach and interactivity in promoting social change and development initiatives. In Keffi Local Government Area (LGA), Nasarawa State, the increasing adoption of platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram provides opportunities to address issues like education, healthcare, and economic empowerment. Social media campaigns are particularly effective in engaging younger audiences, fostering community participation, and disseminating development-oriented messages at scale (Ahmed & Musa, 2024; Yusuf et al., 2025). Studies indicate that well-structured social media campaigns that incorporate storytelling, visual content, and user engagement significantly enhance message retention and behavioral change (Bello & Adebayo, 2023). This study explores how social media campaigns serve as tools for development communication in Keffi LGA, focusing on their design, implementation, and impact on local development.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential of social media to foster development, its usage in Keffi LGA for development communication remains limited and underutilized. Many campaigns fail to achieve their desired impact due to poor design, lack of cultural relevance, or insufficient engagement with target audiences (Okonkwo et al., 2024). Additionally, challenges such as digital illiteracy and limited internet access hinder the effectiveness of social media campaigns in driving behavioral change (Ahmed et al., 2025). This study investigates the effectiveness of social media campaigns as tools for development communication, addressing these gaps and identifying strategies for enhancing their impact in Keffi LGA.
