ABSTRACT
This study was carried out on the effect of poor condition of service on staff performance using Bassa Local Government Of Kogi State As Case Study. To achieve this 5 research questions were formulated. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of the staff of Bassa Local Government Of Kogi State. In determining the sample size, the researcher randomly selected 125 respondents while 100 respondents were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and percentage. The result of the findings reveals that; political instability is one of the major causes poor condition of service in Bassa Local Government Of Kogi State; poor leadership also contribute to the issue of poor condition of service in Bassa local government.; the condition of service affect the performance of staff in Bassa local government, ignorance on its own part in the local government and the staff cause poor condition of service in Bassa local government and the bureaucratic nature of Bassa Local Government area cause poor condition of service. Based on the findings, it is of the researcher opined that Political instability which have been revealed as a major cause of poor service arises most in an environment where corruption is the order of the day. Hence the key authorities in local government should not allow or dance to the nature of corruption practiced in the federal and state levels; and more so leadership has also been a factor in the phase of poor performance of organizations, poor leadership can disintegrate the culture or standard of any organization which will surely result to workers inefficiency and even poor service. Therefore adequate knowledge of a good leadership style should be acquired through training by staff who hold paramount leadership positions in the local government.
