Background of the Study

Censorship in print media refers to the suppression or restriction of content that is considered objectionable, harmful, or politically sensitive. It has long been a controversial practice, particularly in societies where press freedom is an important pillar of democracy. In Jalingo Local Government Area, Taraba State, print media outlets are subject to varying degrees of government influence, societal pressures, and regulatory frameworks. These factors contribute to the perceived prevalence and nature of censorship in the region. Public perception of censorship in print media is influenced by the extent to which citizens believe that media outlets are being restricted or controlled by external forces such as government agencies, corporate interests, or even political affiliations. This study explores how the public in Jalingo perceives censorship in print media, and how this perception shapes their trust in the media and their access to information (Ibrahim & Adebayo, 2023; Suleiman & Okoro, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Jalingo, there are concerns about censorship in the local print media, with reports of editorial content being altered or withheld due to political or governmental influence. This creates a situation where the public is left uncertain about the accuracy and reliability of the information presented in the media. Censorship may result in the underreporting of critical issues such as human rights violations, corruption, and government inefficiencies, leading to a limited understanding of local and national affairs. The public's perception of censorship in print media remains under-explored, and understanding it is essential for assessing the relationship between the media and society in Jalingo. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating public perceptions of censorship in local print media (Bello & Ibrahim, 2023; Musa & Suleiman, 2024).
