Background of the Study

The rise of social media platforms has significantly transformed communication, creating new spaces for interaction and information dissemination. However, this transformation has also brought with it challenges such as cyberbullying, which affects individuals’ mental and emotional well-being. In Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State, the spread of cyberbullying on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter has become a growing concern. Social media policies, both at the national and platform levels, aim to regulate content and reduce online harassment, but the effectiveness of these policies in curbing cyberbullying remains uncertain. While laws and guidelines are in place to deter harmful online behavior, enforcement and adherence to these regulations often vary. This study examines the role of social media policies in preventing cyberbullying in Kano Municipal, with a focus on understanding their effectiveness and identifying gaps in policy implementation (Abubakar & Ibrahim, 2023; Musa & Yusuf, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Cyberbullying in Kano Municipal has become a pressing issue, with incidents of online harassment, threats, and bullying on social media platforms reported frequently. While several social media platforms have implemented policies to combat cyberbullying, the challenge lies in their enforcement and the limited awareness of these policies among users. Moreover, the absence of specific local laws that directly address the issue exacerbates the situation. As a result, many victims of cyberbullying in Kano Municipal experience long-term psychological effects, and the media’s role in reporting these incidents is often overshadowed by the lack of adequate policies and proactive measures (Bello & Suleiman, 2024; Ibrahim, 2023).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of social media policies in preventing cyberbullying in Kano Municipal.

  2. To assess the effectiveness of existing social media policies in addressing cyberbullying.

  3. To propose recommendations for improving social media policies to prevent cyberbullying in Kano Municipal.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What role do social media policies play in preventing cyberbullying in Kano Municipal?

  2. How effective are the existing social media policies in addressing cyberbullying in the area?

  3. What recommendations can be made to enhance the effectiveness of social media policies in preventing cyberbullying?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Social media policies have a significant role in reducing incidents of cyberbullying in Kano Municipal.

  2. Existing social media policies are insufficient in preventing and addressing cyberbullying.

  3. Strengthening awareness and enforcement of social media policies will reduce cyberbullying incidents in Kano Municipal.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it provides insights into the role of social media policies in mitigating cyberbullying, a growing concern in Kano Municipal. The findings will help inform policymakers, social media companies, and advocacy groups about the effectiveness of current policies and offer practical recommendations for creating a safer online environment for residents.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role and effectiveness of social media policies in preventing cyberbullying in Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State. It is limited to the assessment of existing policies and their impact on the local population.
