Background of the Study

Conflict reporting remains one of the most challenging yet crucial aspects of journalism, as it involves navigating complex dynamics of truth-telling, public interest, and ethical responsibility. In Damaturu Local Government Area, conflict reporting has intensified due to ongoing security issues, including insurgency and communal clashes. Ethical dilemmas such as sensationalism, bias, and potential harm to vulnerable populations often confront journalists operating in this volatile environment (Aliyu et al., 2024; Obaji, 2025). Despite guidelines provided by professional bodies, compliance varies significantly, raising questions about the adequacy of training and resources available to journalists. According to Ojo and Usman (2023), ethical lapses in conflict reporting can exacerbate tensions, undermine public trust, and hinder peacebuilding efforts. This study explores the ethical landscape of conflict reporting in Damaturu to identify best practices and areas for improvement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The rising incidence of conflicts in Damaturu has placed a spotlight on the ethical responsibilities of journalists. While media coverage plays a critical role in informing the public and fostering dialogue, unethical practices such as biased reporting and sensationalism risk fueling divisions and compromising journalistic integrity (Zubair et al., 2023; Dada, 2024). Challenges such as limited access to accurate information, safety concerns, and political interference further complicate the ethical dimensions of conflict reporting. This study investigates these issues to address gaps in knowledge and practice.
