Background of the Study

The rise of social media has revolutionized how information is disseminated and consumed. However, it has also led to an increase in the spread of fake news, which poses serious challenges to public trust, social cohesion, and democracy. In Kankia Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State, the prevalence of fake news on social media platforms has raised concerns about its impact on public opinion and behavior. This study will explore the role of social media in combating fake news in Kankia, focusing on how local residents utilize social media to identify, challenge, and correct misinformation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Fake news continues to spread rapidly on social media, undermining public trust in information sources and exacerbating social and political divisions. In Kankia, social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter are commonly used, but misinformation also spreads swiftly, leading to confusion and misguided actions. This study will investigate how social media is used to combat fake news and whether it is effective in raising awareness about misinformation in Kankia.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings will contribute to the understanding of how social media can be leveraged to combat fake news in rural areas. The study will be valuable for social media platforms, governments, and civil society organizations looking to develop strategies for tackling misinformation in local communities.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the use of social media in combating fake news in Kankia LGA, Katsina State. Limitations include challenges in determining the accuracy of self-reported data and the potential influence of other factors, such as traditional media, in combating fake news.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Social Media: Online platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter used for communication, information sharing, and social interaction.

  2. Fake News: Misinformation or disinformation presented as legitimate news, often spread through social media.

  3. Public Opinion: The collective views, beliefs, and attitudes of the public regarding a particular issue, event, or person.
