Chapter One: Introduction

Background of the Study

Youth unemployment is a significant issue in Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions, where economic opportunities are limited. Damboa, located in Borno State, has faced high levels of youth unemployment due to a combination of factors such as security challenges, limited access to education and training, and a lack of local employment opportunities. However, in recent years, social media platforms have emerged as a potential solution to bridging the gap between unemployed youth and available opportunities. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn provide a space for young people to network, develop skills, access job opportunities, and engage in entrepreneurial activities. By exploring how social media has facilitated the reduction of unemployment among youth in Damboa, this study seeks to uncover how these platforms contribute to skill development, networking, and job creation in the region.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing use of social media among youths in Nigeria, particularly in northern states like Borno, it remains unclear to what extent these platforms have contributed to reducing unemployment in regions such as Damboa. Youths may have access to social media, but challenges such as illiteracy, lack of digital skills, and inadequate infrastructure may limit the effectiveness of these platforms in promoting employment opportunities. This study seeks to explore how social media platforms are used to connect unemployed youths with jobs and how they contribute to reducing unemployment in Damboa.

  2. To explore the effectiveness of social media platforms in providing job opportunities for youth in Damboa.

  3. To identify the challenges faced by youths in using social media for employment and skill development.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do social media platforms contribute to reducing unemployment among youths in Damboa?

  2. What role do social media platforms play in connecting youths to job opportunities in Damboa?

  3. What are the challenges faced by youths in using social media to find employment or engage in entrepreneurial activities?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Social media platforms have a significant positive impact on reducing youth unemployment in Damboa.

  2. Youths in Damboa face challenges in utilizing social media for employment due to limited digital literacy and internet access.

  3. Social media plays a vital role in connecting youths in Damboa with job opportunities and skill development resources.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will shed light on the role of social media in addressing youth unemployment in northern Nigeria. The findings will help policymakers, NGOs, and social media platforms understand the potential of digital tools in promoting economic empowerment for youths. Additionally, the study will inform future strategies for using social media as a tool for youth employment and entrepreneurship.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on youths in Damboa LGA, Borno State, and explore the role of social media in addressing unemployment in this context. The study will not address other factors contributing to youth unemployment, such as economic policies, education systems, or government interventions.
