Background of the Study
Polio eradication has been a global priority for over three decades, with efforts intensifying in regions where the disease is still prevalent, such as parts of Nigeria. Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, has been one of the focus areas for polio eradication campaigns in Northern Nigeria. Media campaigns play a crucial role in raising awareness, educating the public, and dispelling misconceptions about the disease, as well as encouraging vaccination uptake. Television, radio, and print media have been used extensively to inform the public about the importance of vaccination, safety, and the consequences of polio. Despite these efforts, Borno State has faced unique challenges, including insecurity and misinformation, that hinder the effectiveness of these media campaigns. The focus of this study is to explore the extent to which media campaigns have contributed to the progress made in polio eradication in Maiduguri and identify factors that have influenced the success or limitations of these campaigns.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While significant progress has been made in reducing polio transmission rates in Nigeria, Maiduguri remains a critical area where additional efforts are needed to achieve full eradication. The role of media campaigns in addressing the persistent challenges, such as public distrust, security concerns, and misinformation, has not been fully examined. How have media campaigns influenced public attitudes towards polio vaccination in Maiduguri? What factors affect the reach and effectiveness of these media efforts in promoting vaccination? This study aims to assess the impact of media campaigns on polio eradication efforts in Maiduguri, exploring both successes and challenges.
