Background of the Study

Social media has transformed the way politicians engage with the electorate, enabling direct, real-time communication between elected officials and the public. Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram allow politicians to reach vast audiences and interact with voters in a more informal and personal manner. In Kaltungo LGA, Gombe State, where political engagement has traditionally been limited to face-to-face interactions and conventional media, social media provides an opportunity to bridge the communication gap between politicians and their constituents. This study will investigate the role of social media in enhancing political participation, increasing transparency, and fostering a more interactive relationship between politicians and the electorate in Kaltungo LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential of social media to enhance political communication, its impact on bridging the gap between politicians and voters in Kaltungo LGA remains underexplored. How do politicians in Kaltungo LGA use social media to communicate with their constituents? Does social media contribute to improving the relationship between politicians and the electorate? This study aims to assess the extent to which social media serves as a tool for political engagement and bridging the communication divide in Kaltungo LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of social media in improving political communication between politicians and the electorate in Kaltungo LGA.

  2. To evaluate the impact of social media on political participation in Kaltungo LGA.

  3. To explore how social media helps politicians build trust and transparency with voters in Kaltungo LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does social media improve political communication between politicians and the electorate in Kaltungo LGA?

  2. What impact does social media have on political participation and voter engagement in Kaltungo LGA?

  3. How does social media contribute to building trust and transparency between politicians and the electorate in Kaltungo LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Social media improves political communication between politicians and the electorate in Kaltungo LGA.

  2. Social media has a significant impact on political participation and voter engagement in Kaltungo LGA.

  3. Social media fosters trust and transparency between politicians and voters in Kaltungo LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to understanding how social media can be leveraged to improve political communication, engagement, and transparency. The findings will inform political strategies for improving relationships with voters, enhancing civic participation, and increasing political accountability in Kaltungo LGA.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the role of social media in political communication within Kaltungo LGA, Gombe State. The study will not address other forms of political communication such as traditional media or face-to-face interactions.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Social Media: Online platforms that facilitate the creation and sharing of content, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

  2. Political Communication: The process through which information is conveyed between politicians, the media, and the electorate.

  3. Political Participation: The involvement of citizens in activities that influence the selection of political leaders and the policies they implement.
