Background of the Study

In today’s globalized world, media plays a pivotal role in shaping cultural and social trends, particularly among young people. Teenage fashion, which often reflects the desires, aspirations, and attitudes of the youth, is heavily influenced by various media outlets, including television, social media, and fashion magazines (Okoye & Bello, 2024). In Wase LGA, Plateau State, teenagers are exposed to both local and international fashion trends through media, which they often adopt and modify according to their own cultural context. While traditional forms of fashion influence such as family and peer groups remain important, media platforms have become a dominant force in determining what is considered stylish and fashionable. This study seeks to explore how different types of media—especially social media and television—affect teenage fashion trends in Wase LGA, focusing on the factors that drive media consumption among teenagers and how they translate media content into fashion choices.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While media is known to influence teenage behavior and culture, the specific impact of media on teenage fashion trends in Wase LGA has not been well-documented. How do teenagers in Wase LGA consume media, and to what extent do they adopt fashion trends from these media platforms? This study will investigate whether media consumption contributes significantly to shaping teenage fashion preferences and whether there are any local variations in how media influences these trends in Wase LGA.

  3. Factors such as peer influence, celebrity culture, and social status drive teenagers in Wase LGA to adopt media-influenced fashion trends.

This study will provide insights into the relationship between media and teenage fashion trends in Wase LGA, contributing to the broader understanding of media influence on youth culture. The findings will be useful for media practitioners, educators, and fashion industry professionals seeking to understand the dynamics of teenage fashion and its connection to media consumption.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on teenagers in Wase LGA and will examine the impact of media on their fashion trends. It will not consider other age groups or other areas outside of Wase LGA. The research will be limited to analyzing the influence of media on teenage fashion and will not examine other factors such as family or cultural influences.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Teenage Fashion Trends: The prevailing styles and preferences in clothing, footwear, and accessories among teenagers.

  2. Media Influence: The effect that various media platforms, including television, social media, and magazines, have on individuals’ behaviors, beliefs, and preferences.

  3. Social Media: Digital platforms, such as Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, that allow users to create, share, and consume content related to various aspects of life, including fashion.
