Background of the Study

Traditional media, such as radio, television, and print media, continue to play a significant role in shaping public opinion, particularly in rural and remote areas of Nigeria. In Taraba State, the region’s ethnic diversity and frequent socio-political tensions make the role of traditional media in promoting peace and harmony even more important (Adebayo & Sulaimon, 2023). Jalingo Local Government Area, being the capital of Taraba, has witnessed the potential of traditional media outlets to mediate conflicts, raise awareness about the importance of unity, and promote peace-building initiatives. Traditional media platforms like radio and local TV stations have been used to broadcast peace messages, educate the public about inter-ethnic coexistence, and engage with community leaders in promoting conflict resolution. This study aims to examine the role of traditional media in peace promotion in Jalingo, evaluating its effectiveness in diffusing tensions and fostering cooperation among different ethnic groups.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential of traditional media to promote peace, the effectiveness of these platforms in addressing ethnic and political tensions in Jalingo LGA remains unclear. With various conflicts arising due to political disagreements, ethnic rivalries, and resource allocation issues, the question arises whether traditional media has been able to make a tangible impact in promoting peace and reducing violence. This study seeks to address this gap by exploring how traditional media contributes to peace efforts in the region and the challenges it faces in sustaining such initiatives.

  1. To examine the role of traditional media in promoting peace in Jalingo LGA, Taraba State.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of traditional media in reducing ethnic and political tensions in Jalingo LGA.

  3. To explore the challenges faced by traditional media in peace-building efforts in Jalingo LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  2. How effective is traditional media in reducing ethnic and political tensions in Jalingo LGA?

  3. What challenges does traditional media face in peace-building efforts in Jalingo LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Traditional media significantly contributes to peace promotion in Jalingo LGA.

  2. Traditional media plays an effective role in reducing ethnic and political conflicts in Jalingo LGA.

  3. Challenges related to resource limitations and audience engagement hinder the effectiveness of traditional media in peace promotion.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it provides an in-depth analysis of the role of traditional media in peace-building in a volatile region of Nigeria. By identifying the strengths and limitations of traditional media in Jalingo, the study will inform the development of more targeted peace campaigns using these media platforms. Policymakers, peace activists, and media practitioners will find the findings valuable in designing future peace-promoting initiatives.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus solely on the role of traditional media in promoting peace in Jalingo LGA, Taraba State, and will not include digital or social media platforms. The findings will be limited to the effectiveness of peace promotion in the selected region, which may not fully apply to other parts of the state or the country.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Traditional Media: Forms of mass communication such as radio, television, and print newspapers, typically used in local communities for information dissemination.

  2. Peace Promotion: Activities or messages aimed at reducing violence, fostering understanding, and promoting social cohesion among different ethnic or political groups.
