Background of the Study

Drug abuse has become a significant public health issue in many parts of Nigeria, including Tudun Wada Local Government Area (LGA) in Plateau State. As drug abuse continues to rise, the role of media in raising awareness, providing education, and changing attitudes towards drug abuse has never been more important. Media campaigns, including public service announcements, documentaries, and news stories, play a vital role in informing the public about the dangers of drug abuse, the resources available for treatment, and the steps individuals can take to avoid substance use (Ogunbiyi & Ajayi, 2023). In Tudun Wada LGA, where drug abuse among youth has been linked to social instability, media outlets have a critical responsibility to address this issue by promoting healthy lifestyles, showcasing recovery stories, and influencing societal norms. This study aims to assess the role of media in combating drug abuse and explore how effective media strategies are in reducing drug abuse rates in the region.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite media efforts to combat drug abuse, the prevalence of substance use and its negative consequences in Tudun Wada LGA remain high. The problem lies in understanding the effectiveness of media campaigns and programs in addressing drug abuse within the community. Are media messages reaching the target audience? Do they lead to actual behavior change among at-risk individuals? The challenge is determining whether the media's current approach is sufficient or if there are gaps that need to be filled to better tackle the issue of drug abuse in the region. This study seeks to explore the impact of media in reducing drug abuse in Tudun Wada LGA.
