Background of the Study

The advent of technology has revolutionized how businesses operate, with the Point of Sale (POS) system standing out as a key innovation. POS systems, which integrate hardware and software to facilitate sales transactions, have become a crucial tool for small businesses. In markets such as Yaba, Lagos State, where entrepreneurial activities thrive, the adoption of POS systems is particularly significant. These systems simplify transaction processes, provide real-time sales analysis, and reduce errors associated with manual bookkeeping.

According to Olawale and Falade (2023), the Nigerian small business sector contributes approximately 48% to the nation’s GDP. However, one of the primary challenges faced by these businesses is financial inefficiency, stemming from poor record-keeping and cash management. POS systems provide an avenue for addressing these issues by offering efficient payment options and streamlining financial operations. Furthermore, the Central Bank of Nigeria's cashless policy, introduced to promote electronic payment systems, has led to an increase in the adoption of POS technologies by small businesses (Afolabi, 2024).

Despite these advantages, some small business owners are skeptical about the profitability of investing in POS systems, often citing concerns about maintenance costs, data security, and technical breakdowns. There is also limited empirical evidence on the direct relationship between POS system usage and business profitability in densely populated markets such as Yaba. This study, therefore, seeks to critically evaluate the impact of POS systems on small business profitability within this context.

Statement of the Problem

Small businesses in Yaba Market, Lagos State, play a critical role in local economic development. However, these businesses often struggle with profitability due to inefficient payment processes, unorganized record-keeping, and the high costs associated with traditional cash handling methods. While the adoption of POS systems is expected to address these inefficiencies, the extent to which these systems directly enhance profitability remains unclear.

Additionally, technical issues, insufficient training on POS usage, and network failures hinder the effective use of these systems. Although studies have explored the broader implications of technology on business operations, there is a paucity of research that focuses specifically on the profitability impact of POS systems in local markets such as Yaba. Without a clear understanding of this relationship, small business owners may either underutilize or avoid adopting POS systems altogether, potentially limiting their growth and financial sustainability.

1. To assess the level of adoption of POS systems among small businesses in Yaba Market, Lagos State.

2. To evaluate the impact of POS systems on the profitability of small businesses in Yaba Market.

3. To identify challenges associated with POS system usage and provide recommendations for improved adoption.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on small businesses within Yaba Market, Lagos State. It evaluates the adoption and impact of POS systems on their profitability.
