Background of the Study
Exchange rate fluctuations have a significant impact on economies globally, particularly in countries like Nigeria, where the cost of imported goods and services is highly sensitive to exchange rate movements. Nigerian private universities, which rely heavily on foreign currencies for purchasing educational materials, paying international faculty, and funding infrastructure development, are particularly vulnerable to exchange rate volatility. These fluctuations often lead to increased costs for universities, which, in turn, affect tuition fees for students (Adebisi & Omotayo, 2023).
The impact of exchange rate fluctuations on tuition fees in Nigerian private universities has become more pronounced in recent years, as the value of the Nigerian naira has depreciated against major international currencies. This phenomenon has led to higher costs for university operations, prompting many institutions to increase their tuition fees to cover the additional expenses. This study aims to investigate the relationship between exchange rate fluctuations and tuition fee increases in Nigerian private universities, focusing on how such fluctuations influence financial decision-making and the affordability of higher education (Ugochukwu & Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Exchange rate fluctuations have become a major challenge for Nigerian private universities, leading to increased operational costs and a corresponding rise in tuition fees. These fee hikes have raised concerns among students and parents, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds, about the affordability of education. While some universities have sought to mitigate these impacts through internal cost-cutting measures, the overall effect of exchange rate volatility on tuition fees remains underexplored. This study will investigate the extent to which exchange rate fluctuations impact tuition fees in Nigerian private universities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on Nigerian private universities, examining the relationship between exchange rate fluctuations and tuition fees. The study will be limited by access to detailed financial data from universities, as well as the challenge of isolating the impact of exchange rate fluctuations from other factors influencing tuition fees.
