Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Child trafficking is a severe social issue that has plagued many regions of Nigeria, including Chibok Local Government Area (LGA) in Borno State, which has been significantly affected by insecurity and displacement caused by insurgent activities. In such environments, children are particularly vulnerable to exploitation, including trafficking for labor, sexual exploitation, and use in armed conflict. The role of digital media in combating child trafficking is emerging as an effective strategy for raising awareness, providing real-time information, and mobilizing communities against trafficking activities. Digital platforms, particularly social media, are being used to expose traffickers, advocate for children’s rights, and connect at-risk communities with resources and support. According to recent findings by Bakare and Yusuf (2023), digital media has become an important tool in anti-trafficking campaigns, helping to educate the public, advocate for policy changes, and facilitate rescue operations. This study seeks to explore the role of digital media in combating child trafficking in Chibok, focusing on the effectiveness of digital platforms in raising awareness, mobilizing action, and protecting children from trafficking.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Child trafficking remains a persistent issue in Chibok, compounded by the challenges of insecurity and displacement. While there are efforts from both government and non-governmental organizations to combat trafficking, the issue remains widespread. Despite the potential of digital media to aid in awareness campaigns and advocacy, its effectiveness in reducing trafficking in conflict zones like Chibok has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to explore how digital media can be utilized to combat child trafficking in Chibok and to assess its impact on raising awareness and curbing trafficking activities in the area.
