Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Disaster preparedness plays a critical role in mitigating the impact of natural disasters and man-made emergencies. Numan Local Government Area (LGA) in Adamawa State, located in a region prone to flooding, communal violence, and other hazards, faces significant challenges in ensuring that its population is adequately prepared for disasters. The increasing reliance on digital media offers new opportunities for enhancing disaster preparedness, as digital platforms can be used to disseminate early warning systems, safety protocols, and disaster relief information. Research by Alhassan et al. (2023) indicates that digital media has been instrumental in improving disaster preparedness by providing real-time updates and facilitating communication between government agencies, humanitarian organizations, and affected communities. This study seeks to explore how digital media is being used to enhance disaster preparedness in Numan, focusing on its effectiveness in informing residents and reducing the impact of disasters.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing use of digital media globally, Numan LGA faces challenges in effectively utilizing digital platforms for disaster preparedness due to issues such as limited digital literacy, infrastructure gaps, and inadequate access to technology in rural areas. This study aims to investigate the role of digital media in enhancing disaster preparedness in Numan, exploring its potential to improve the speed and accuracy of disaster response and the effectiveness of public awareness campaigns.
