Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Humanitarian aid has become increasingly vital in conflict zones and areas affected by natural disasters, and social media platforms have proven essential in raising awareness, mobilizing support, and coordinating aid efforts. In Chibok, Borno State, a region affected by insurgency and security challenges, social media has played a key role in connecting local communities with humanitarian organizations, raising awareness about the needs of displaced persons, and fostering international support. Research by Abubakar and Ahmed (2023) suggests that platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have been instrumental in galvanizing humanitarian support, making it easier for organizations to disseminate information, collect donations, and coordinate aid efforts. This study examines the role of social media in driving humanitarian aid to Chibok LGA, focusing on how it facilitates communication and aid delivery.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While social media has proven to be a powerful tool for promoting humanitarian causes globally, its effectiveness in driving aid to conflict-affected areas such as Chibok is not fully understood. Despite the existence of various humanitarian efforts, the challenge remains in ensuring that social media platforms are used optimally to connect aid agencies with local communities and mobilize support effectively. This study aims to explore how social media has been used in Chibok to drive humanitarian aid and assess its impact on the delivery and reception of aid.
