Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The digital divide refers to the gap between individuals, communities, and regions that have access to modern information and communication technologies (ICTs) and those that do not. In Nigeria, rural areas like Kontagora Local Government Area (LGA) in Niger State face significant challenges in accessing digital technologies and the internet, exacerbating social and economic inequalities. According to Oloyede and Aliyu (2023), bridging the digital divide is essential for ensuring equal opportunities in education, healthcare, business, and governance. Digital media, through its ability to connect people across geographical boundaries, plays a crucial role in narrowing this gap. This study explores how digital media is being used in Kontagora LGA to address the digital divide, enhance access to ICT, and foster greater social and economic inclusion.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite global efforts to expand digital access, communities in Kontagora still face challenges related to limited access to digital technologies, internet connectivity, and digital literacy. This lack of access not only limits individual opportunities but also hinders community development and participation in broader national and global discourses. While digital media has the potential to bridge the digital divide, there is a lack of comprehensive research on how digital media tools are being used effectively to close this gap in Kontagora. This study seeks to address this gap by assessing the role of digital media in enhancing ICT access and usage in the area.
