Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Digital media plays a significant role in promoting civic engagement, particularly in local governance. In Gboko Local Government Area, Benue State, digital media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and YouTube provide spaces for citizens to engage with local government initiatives, express their opinions, and participate in discussions about public policy. According to Ojo and Ajayi (2023), digital media has become an essential tool for enhancing democratic participation, offering individuals a platform to contribute to civic activities, raise awareness about community issues, and engage with governmental processes. In Gboko, where many citizens are increasingly adopting smartphones and internet access is expanding, digital media presents an opportunity for fostering civic responsibility. This study investigates how digital media contributes to increased civic engagement in Gboko, examining how social media and other digital platforms are utilized by the population to influence local governance, electoral processes, and public policy discussions.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
While digital media has the potential to enhance civic engagement, there are concerns regarding its actual impact in Gboko. Factors such as digital literacy, limited internet penetration in rural areas, and misinformation may hinder its effectiveness as a tool for civic participation. This study seeks to explore how digital media is utilized in Gboko for promoting civic engagement and to assess its effectiveness in facilitating meaningful participation in governance.
