Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
In recent years, digital media has become increasingly influential in shaping educational outcomes worldwide. In Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, students and teachers are increasingly utilizing digital media platforms, including online learning platforms, educational apps, and social media, to supplement traditional learning. The proliferation of smartphones and increased internet access has made it easier for students to access educational resources, participate in online courses, and engage in academic discussions outside the classroom. However, while digital media has the potential to enhance learning, concerns have emerged about its impact on academic performance, with some studies suggesting that excessive use of digital media can lead to distractions and decreased focus. This study aims to explore the effects of digital media on the academic performance of students in Karu, focusing on both the positive and negative consequences of its use in the educational context.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing use of digital media among students in Karu, there is limited research on its actual impact on academic performance. While digital media provides valuable resources for learning, there is a concern that students may become distracted by non-educational content, leading to a decline in their academic performance. Furthermore, the gap in digital literacy among students may contribute to unequal access to these resources, impacting their ability to fully benefit from digital media. This study seeks to evaluate how digital media influences students’ academic performance in Karu and the factors that mediate this relationship.
