Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Social media has increasingly become a dominant force in political communication, influencing public opinion, voter behavior, and election outcomes. In Minna Local Government Area, Niger State, platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have become critical tools for political campaigns, enabling candidates to reach voters directly, bypassing traditional media gatekeepers. The influence of social media on voting behavior is particularly significant in a state like Niger, where rural populations may have limited access to traditional media. Research by Olamide and Sulaimon (2023) indicates that social media can sway voter opinions by providing political information, fostering political discussions, and even spreading misinformation. This study seeks to examine how social media affects the voting behavior of residents in Minna, particularly in terms of election preferences, political engagement, and participation.
