Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Early child marriage remains a critical issue in many parts of Nigeria, including Zango Kataf Local Government Area in Kaduna State. Rooted in poverty, cultural norms, and gender inequality, early marriage deprives girls of education, exposes them to health risks, and limits their socioeconomic potential. Broadcasting, particularly through radio and television, has emerged as an influential medium for advocacy and social change. According to Ibrahim and Chukwu (2024), broadcasting can challenge traditional norms, empower communities with knowledge, and provide a platform for dialogue on sensitive issues. In Zango Kataf, localized broadcasting campaigns tailored to the community's cultural context can play a pivotal role in shifting attitudes and behaviors toward early marriage. However, the extent to which broadcasting has contributed to eradicating early child marriage in this area remains underexplored, necessitating this study.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite interventions to combat early child marriage, the practice persists in Zango Kataf, perpetuating cycles of poverty and gender inequality. Broadcasting offers a promising solution, but its impact in raising awareness and influencing behavioral change is unclear. Challenges such as cultural resistance, limited access to media, and poorly contextualized messaging hinder progress. Without empirical evidence, efforts to leverage broadcasting for eradicating early child marriage may fall short of achieving their objectives.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To examine how broadcasting raises awareness about the dangers of early child marriage in Zango Kataf.
To assess the impact of broadcasting on community attitudes toward early child marriage in Zango Kataf.
To identify challenges in using broadcasting to combat early child marriage in Zango Kataf.

Significant challenges limit the effectiveness of broadcasting in combating early child marriage in Zango Kataf.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study is essential for broadcasters, advocates, and policymakers working to eradicate early child marriage in Zango Kataf. It provides evidence-based insights into the role of broadcasting in shaping community perceptions and behaviors, offering practical recommendations for enhancing advocacy efforts. Broadcasters can use the findings to design culturally relevant content, while policymakers can integrate broadcasting into comprehensive strategies for ending child marriage. Academically, the study contributes to the discourse on media and social change, filling a critical gap in the literature.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Zango Kataf Local Government Area in Kaduna State, focusing on the impact of broadcasting in eradicating early child marriage. It excludes other media platforms and regions outside Zango Kataf.
