Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Access to safe drinking water is a fundamental human right and a key determinant of public health. In many rural areas of Nigeria, including Kuje Local Government Area (LGA) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), waterborne diseases are a major health concern due to the consumption of unsafe water. Radio jingles, which are short, catchy, and easily memorable audio advertisements, have been used effectively to promote public health messages. These jingles can raise awareness about the importance of safe drinking water practices, such as boiling or filtering water, and encourage communities to adopt hygienic water practices. This study explores the influence of radio jingles on safe drinking water practices in Kuje LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Kuje LGA, unsafe drinking water is a significant health risk, and many residents lack awareness of proper water treatment methods. While radio jingles have been used in other areas to promote health practices, there is limited research on their effectiveness in promoting safe drinking water practices in Kuje LGA. This study aims to assess the influence of radio jingles in encouraging safe drinking water practices and improving public health in the area.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the influence of radio jingles on safe drinking water practices in Kuje LGA.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of radio jingles in raising awareness about the importance of safe drinking water in Kuje LGA.
3. To explore the impact of radio jingles on changing public behavior toward water treatment and hygiene practices in Kuje LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
1. How do radio jingles influence safe drinking water practices in Kuje LGA?
2. To what extent are radio jingles effective in raising awareness about safe drinking water practices in Kuje LGA?
3. How do radio jingles impact public behavior toward water treatment and hygiene practices in Kuje LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1. Radio jingles significantly influence safe drinking water practices in Kuje LGA.
2. Radio jingles are effective in raising awareness about safe drinking water practices in Kuje LGA.
3. Radio jingles positively impact public behavior toward water treatment and hygiene practices in Kuje LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the effectiveness of radio jingles as a tool for promoting safe drinking water practices and improving public health in rural communities. The findings will be useful for health organizations, media practitioners, and policymakers seeking to improve water safety and reduce waterborne diseases in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Kuje Local Government Area in the Federal Capital Territory and focuses on the role of radio jingles in promoting safe drinking water practices. It does not include other forms of media or regions outside of Kuje LGA.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
1. Radio Jingles: Short, catchy audio advertisements used to convey messages in a memorable and engaging manner.
2. Safe Drinking Water: Water that is free from harmful contaminants and is suitable for human consumption.
3. Waterborne Diseases: Illnesses caused by the consumption of contaminated water, including cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever.
