Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Mental health issues have long been under-recognized in many parts of Nigeria, including Tarmuwa Local Government Area (LGA), Yobe State. Despite the increasing global attention to mental health, stigma, lack of awareness, and inadequate mental health services remain significant barriers to addressing mental health challenges in rural communities. Local radio, with its wide reach and accessibility, plays a pivotal role in raising awareness, providing information, and reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues. Through informative programs, interviews with experts, and real-life stories, local radio stations can foster a better understanding of mental health, encourage people to seek help, and promote community-wide mental health awareness (Aliyu & Musa, 2023; Usman & Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines the role of local radio in creating awareness of mental health issues in Tarmuwa LGA, focusing on how radio broadcasts influence attitudes toward mental health and improve public understanding.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential of local radio in raising awareness about mental health issues, the impact of radio broadcasts on mental health awareness in rural areas such as Tarmuwa LGA remains largely unexplored. Mental health issues are often misunderstood or ignored, and individuals may be hesitant to seek help due to stigma or lack of knowledge. This study aims to assess how local radio can contribute to reducing stigma, increasing mental health literacy, and encouraging individuals to seek professional help in Tarmuwa LGA.

2. To what extent do radio programs reduce stigma associated with mental health issues in Tarmuwa LGA?

3. How effective is local radio in encouraging individuals in Tarmuwa LGA to seek help for mental health challenges?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. Local radio significantly contributes to creating awareness of mental health issues in Tarmuwa LGA.

2. Radio programs have a positive impact on reducing stigma associated with mental health issues in Tarmuwa LGA.

3. Local radio encourages individuals in Tarmuwa LGA to seek professional help for mental health challenges.

The findings will be useful for mental health advocates, policymakers, and media practitioners aiming to improve mental health awareness and reduce stigma in rural communities like Tarmuwa LGA.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to Tarmuwa Local Government Area in Yobe State and focuses on the role of local radio in creating awareness of mental health issues. It does not include other forms of media or other regions of the state.
