Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Substance abuse among youths has become a growing concern in many communities, including Katsina-Ala Local Government Area (LGA) in Benue State. The use of drugs and alcohol by young people can lead to severe health, social, and economic consequences. Local radio stations have been recognized as effective tools for combating substance abuse, particularly in rural areas where access to other forms of education and counseling may be limited. Through radio programs that provide information on the dangers of substance abuse, share recovery stories, and promote healthy lifestyles, local radio can help raise awareness and encourage youths to avoid harmful substances (Ogunyemi & Adebayo, 2023; Ahmed & Ibrahim, 2024). This study explores the role of local radio in combating substance abuse among youths in Katsina-Ala LGA, examining how radio broadcasts contribute to changing attitudes and behaviors related to substance use.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Substance abuse among youths remains a significant issue in Katsina-Ala LGA, despite the efforts of local authorities and organizations to address it. While local radio broadcasts have been used to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse, there is limited research on their effectiveness in changing the behaviors of youths. This study seeks to evaluate the role of local radio in combating substance abuse among youths in Katsina-Ala LGA and assess the impact of radio programs on reducing substance use.
