Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges of the 21st century, with far-reaching effects on the environment, health, and economies. In Nigeria, particularly in Jalingo Local Government Area (LGA), Taraba State, climate change has led to unpredictable weather patterns, reduced agricultural productivity, and increased vulnerability to natural disasters. Broadcasting, particularly through radio and television, plays a crucial role in raising awareness about climate change, educating the public on sustainable practices, and encouraging community participation in climate action. Media campaigns can inform the public about the causes and effects of climate change, as well as provide practical solutions such as water conservation, waste management, and sustainable farming practices (Adamu & Ibrahim, 2024; Sani & Usman, 2023). This study aims to explore the role of broadcasting in addressing climate change in Jalingo LGA, focusing on how radio and television programs contribute to public awareness and behavioral change.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing awareness of climate change globally, there is limited research on the role of broadcasting in addressing climate change at the local level in Nigeria. In Jalingo LGA, while there are occasional media broadcasts on environmental issues, there is insufficient data on the effectiveness of these broadcasts in influencing public attitudes and actions toward climate change. This study seeks to examine the impact of broadcasting in addressing climate change and its effectiveness in promoting environmental sustainability in Jalingo LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the role of broadcasting in raising awareness about climate change in Jalingo LGA.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of radio and television programs in promoting climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in Jalingo LGA.

3. To identify the challenges and opportunities in using broadcasting to address climate change in Jalingo LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

1. How does broadcasting contribute to raising awareness about climate change in Jalingo LGA?

2. To what extent have radio and television programs been effective in promoting climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in Jalingo LGA?

3. What challenges and opportunities exist in using broadcasting to address climate change in Jalingo LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. Broadcasting plays a significant role in raising awareness about climate change in Jalingo LGA.

2. Radio and television programs have been effective in promoting climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in Jalingo LGA.

3. The effectiveness of broadcasting in addressing climate change is influenced by factors such as program content, media reach, and community engagement.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into the role of broadcasting in addressing climate change, offering recommendations for improving the effectiveness of media campaigns aimed at promoting environmental sustainability. The findings will be useful for environmental organizations, policymakers, and media practitioners working to address climate change in Jalingo LGA and other similar regions.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to Jalingo Local Government Area in Taraba State and focuses on the role of broadcasting in addressing climate change. It does not include other forms of media or other regions of the state.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

1. Climate Change: Long-term changes in temperature, precipitation, and other atmospheric conditions, often caused by human activities such as deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels.

2. Broadcasting: The dissemination of information through electronic media, including radio and television, aimed at educating the public on various issues, including climate change.

3. Climate Change Mitigation: Actions taken to reduce or prevent the emission of greenhouse gases, such as promoting renewable energy and sustainable farming practices.
