Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Tourism is a significant economic driver in many regions, and in Jos East Local Government Area (LGA), Plateau State, the tourism industry has been an important sector contributing to local development. The role of television in promoting tourism cannot be overstated, as it serves as a powerful tool for showcasing the cultural, natural, and historical attractions of a region. In Jos East, television broadcasts have been used to highlight tourist destinations such as the Shere Hills, the National Museum, and the diverse ethnic cultures present in the region. Television programs, including documentaries, travel shows, and advertisements, help to create awareness, attract tourists, and ultimately stimulate the local economy (Akinwale & Bello, 2023; Usman & Musa, 2024). This study aims to examine the role of television in promoting tourism in Jos East LGA, focusing on how television content influences both local and international tourism.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of Jos East, the tourism sector has not reached its full potential. While television has been used to promote tourism, the effectiveness of these broadcasts in attracting tourists and increasing local awareness remains unclear. This study aims to assess the role of television in promoting tourism in Jos East LGA and evaluate its effectiveness in fostering tourism development.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the role of television in promoting tourism in Jos East LGA.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of television broadcasts in attracting tourists to Jos East LGA.

3. To identify the challenges and opportunities in using television to promote tourism in Jos East LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

1. How does television promote tourism in Jos East LGA?

2. To what extent has television been effective in attracting tourists to Jos East LGA?

3. What challenges and opportunities exist in using television to promote tourism in Jos East LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. Television plays a significant role in promoting tourism in Jos East LGA.

2. Television broadcasts have been effective in attracting tourists to Jos East LGA.

3. The effectiveness of television in promoting tourism is influenced by factors such as content quality, media reach, and viewer engagement.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide insights into the role of television in promoting tourism in Jos East, offering valuable information for policymakers, tourism boards, and media practitioners. The findings can guide future strategies for using television as a tool for tourism promotion and economic development.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to the role of television in promoting tourism in Jos East Local Government Area, Plateau State. It does not include other forms of media or other regions of the state.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

1. Television Broadcasting: The transmission of visual content via television to a wide audience, including programs, advertisements, and documentaries.

2. Tourism Promotion: Efforts aimed at encouraging people to visit a particular destination, often through media and marketing strategies.

3. Tourist Attractions: Places or activities that draw visitors due to their cultural, historical, natural, or recreational value.
