Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Radio remains one of the most accessible and widely consumed forms of media in Nigeria, especially in rural areas where other forms of media may be less accessible. In Kura Local Government Area, Kano State, radio has been a powerful medium for shaping public perceptions of gender roles. Radio programs, particularly those focused on women’s rights, family planning, and gender equality, play a crucial role in challenging traditional gender norms and promoting more progressive views on gender roles (Bello & Umar, 2023; Sulaimon & Abubakar, 2024). These programs often address issues such as women’s empowerment, gender-based violence, and the importance of education for both genders. This study aims to explore the role of radio in shaping perceptions of gender roles in Kura LGA, with a focus on how radio programs influence the attitudes and behaviors of listeners regarding gender equality.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing influence of radio in Kura LGA, there is limited research on its specific impact on shaping perceptions of gender roles in the region. Traditional gender norms are deeply ingrained in many communities, and the media's role in challenging or reinforcing these norms remains underexplored. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining how radio broadcasting influences the perceptions of gender roles in Kura LGA, particularly in terms of promoting gender equality and challenging stereotypes.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of radio in shaping perceptions of gender roles in Kura LGA.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of radio programs in promoting gender equality and challenging traditional gender norms in Kura LGA.
3. To identify the challenges and opportunities in using radio to address gender role perceptions in Kura LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
1. How does radio influence perceptions of gender roles in Kura LGA?
2. To what extent are radio programs effective in promoting gender equality in Kura LGA?
3. What challenges and opportunities exist in using radio to challenge traditional gender norms in Kura LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1. Radio broadcasts significantly influence perceptions of gender roles in Kura LGA.
2. Radio programs have a positive impact on promoting gender equality in Kura LGA.
3. The effectiveness of radio in shaping gender role perceptions is influenced by factors such as cultural resistance and limited program reach.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of how radio can be used as a tool for promoting gender equality and challenging traditional gender roles. The findings will provide valuable insights for media practitioners, policymakers, and gender advocates on how to effectively use radio to influence public attitudes toward gender equality in rural areas.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the role of radio in shaping perceptions of gender roles in Kura Local Government Area, Kano State. It does not include other forms of media or regions.
