Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Environmental degradation is a growing concern in Nigeria, with issues such as deforestation, pollution, and soil erosion posing significant threats to the nation’s natural resources and the health of its population. In Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, local television has become a vital medium for raising awareness about environmental issues and encouraging sustainable practices (Nuhu & Bello, 2023; Ibrahim & Yahaya, 2024). Through documentaries, news reports, and public service announcements, local television stations have informed the public about the causes and consequences of environmental degradation, while also promoting solutions and community-based environmental conservation efforts. This study investigates the impact of local television on public awareness of environmental degradation in Jos South, focusing on how television has contributed to shaping public perceptions and behaviors regarding environmental issues.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While local television has been used to raise awareness about environmental issues, there is limited research on its specific impact on public awareness in Jos South LGA. Environmental degradation continues to be a major problem in the region, and despite the efforts of local media, challenges such as inadequate content, limited reach, and low engagement may affect the effectiveness of television in raising awareness. This study seeks to examine the extent to which local television has contributed to public awareness of environmental degradation in Jos South and identify the factors that enhance or hinder its effectiveness.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the role of local television in raising public awareness of environmental degradation in Jos South LGA.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of local television programs in shaping public perceptions and behaviors regarding environmental issues in Jos South LGA.

3. To identify the challenges and opportunities in using local television to raise awareness about environmental degradation in Jos South LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

1. How does local television raise public awareness of environmental degradation in Jos South LGA?

2. What impact has local television had on public perceptions and behaviors regarding environmental issues in Jos South LGA?

3. What challenges and opportunities exist in using local television to raise awareness about environmental degradation in Jos South LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. Local television significantly contributes to raising public awareness of environmental degradation in Jos South LGA.

2. Local television programs have a positive impact on public perceptions and behaviors regarding environmental conservation in Jos South LGA.

3. Challenges such as limited content and audience engagement affect the effectiveness of local television in raising awareness of environmental issues.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide insights into the role of local television in raising awareness about environmental degradation in Jos South. By examining the effectiveness of television in influencing public perceptions and behaviors, the research will offer recommendations for improving media strategies to address environmental issues in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to the role of local television in raising public awareness of environmental degradation in Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State. It does not include other forms of media or regions.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

1. Local Television: Television stations that serve a specific geographic area, focusing on regional issues and events.

2. Environmental Degradation: The deterioration of the natural environment due to human activity, including deforestation, pollution, and soil erosion.

3. Public Awareness: The level of understanding and consciousness among the general public regarding a particular issue, in this case, environmental degradation.
