Background of the Study

Audit reporting is an essential component of corporate governance, providing transparency in financial statements that aids stakeholders, especially investors, in making informed decisions. In Nigeria, where corporate governance challenges and economic volatility are prevalent, the reliability and transparency of audit reports are crucial for fostering investor confidence (Ezeani & Ibrahim, 2023). Seplat Energy Plc, a leading energy company in Nigeria, provides a significant case for studying how audit reports influence investor decision-making in a complex market.

Seplat’s consistent financial growth and major involvement in the oil and gas sector make it an attractive investment opportunity. However, investors rely on credible and transparent audit reports to assess the company’s financial health, risks, and potential for future growth. This study examines how Seplat’s audit reports influence the decision-making process of investors, considering factors such as the audit firm’s reputation, audit opinion, and disclosure quality.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of audit reports in the investment decision-making process, there are concerns about the level of transparency in Nigerian corporate financial reporting. Investors are often faced with uncertainties due to the limited reliability of audit reports, which may be influenced by external pressures, conflicts of interest, or weaknesses in regulatory enforcement (Agboola & Oloyede, 2023). At Seplat, the role of audit reports in shaping investor decisions remains under-explored, and it is crucial to assess how these reports impact investor trust and decision-making.

This study aims to fill the gap by evaluating the impact of Seplat’s audit reporting on investor decision-making and determining the factors that enhance or diminish the credibility of these reports in the eyes of investors.
