Background of the Study
Women entrepreneurs play a significant role in driving the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. These businesses contribute notably to job creation, innovation, and economic development. In Enugu State, a growing number of women-owned SMEs operate in diverse sectors, such as retail, manufacturing, and services. However, despite their potential, women entrepreneurs face unique challenges in ensuring accounting transparency, which is essential for attracting investors, securing loans, and managing business operations efficiently. Accounting transparency refers to the accurate and clear presentation of a business's financial status, ensuring stakeholders can make informed decisions. Women entrepreneurs, particularly in rural and underserved areas, often struggle with financial management and reporting due to limited access to education, financial resources, and mentorship. This study seeks to examine the role of women entrepreneurs in improving accounting transparency within their SMEs in Enugu State, focusing on how their efforts in financial management contribute to business growth and transparency.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of accounting transparency in business sustainability, many women-led SMEs in Enugu State face difficulties in implementing effective accounting practices. These challenges stem from limited financial literacy, cultural norms, and insufficient support systems. As a result, many women entrepreneurs in the region operate without proper financial records, leading to inefficient management and difficulties in accessing financing. The lack of transparent accounting practices often leads to financial mismanagement and reduced investor confidence. This study aims to assess the role of women entrepreneurs in promoting accounting transparency within their businesses, understanding how their efforts contribute to better financial management and business sustainability.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate how women entrepreneurs in Enugu State implement accounting transparency practices in their SMEs.

  2. To assess the impact of accounting transparency on the financial performance and growth of women-led SMEs in Enugu State.

  3. To identify the challenges women entrepreneurs face in achieving accounting transparency and recommend solutions.
