Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Road traffic accidents remain a major public safety concern in Nigeria, with a significant number of fatalities and injuries occurring each year. In Sabon Gari LGA, Kaduna State, the increasing number of vehicles and pedestrians has led to a rise in road traffic accidents. Advertising has been recognized as an effective tool for promoting road safety awareness and influencing driver and pedestrian behavior. According to research by Mohammed and Suleiman (2023), advertising campaigns that focus on road safety messages can help reduce accidents by educating the public about safe driving practices, the importance of traffic laws, and the consequences of reckless driving. This study explores the role of advertising in reducing road traffic accidents in Sabon Gari LGA, assessing how road safety advertisements influence public awareness, behavior, and accident rates.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to improve road safety in Sabon Gari LGA, the rate of road traffic accidents remains high. One of the potential solutions to this problem is advertising, which can raise awareness about safe driving practices and encourage adherence to traffic laws. However, the effectiveness of advertising in reducing road traffic accidents in this region has not been adequately studied. This study aims to examine the role of advertising in reducing road traffic accidents in Sabon Gari LGA, evaluating how advertisements can influence public behavior and contribute to road safety.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of advertising in promoting road safety awareness in Sabon Gari LGA.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of advertising in changing driver and pedestrian behavior in Sabon Gari LGA.
3. To investigate the impact of advertising on reducing road traffic accidents in Sabon Gari LGA.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the role of advertising in reducing road traffic accidents in Sabon Gari LGA, Kaduna State, and does not extend to other regions or safety interventions.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
1. Road Traffic Accidents: Collisions or incidents involving vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists that result in injury, death, or property damage.
2. Road Safety Advertising: Promotional campaigns aimed at educating the public about safe driving practices and traffic laws.
