1.1 Background of the Study
Shagari Local Government Area in Sokoto State is known for its rich cultural traditions, including the use of ceremonial drumming during important social events such as weddings, festivals, and traditional ceremonies. Ceremonial drumming plays a crucial role in the social fabric of the community, symbolizing unity, spiritual expression, and cultural identity. However, the practice faces challenges due to the rise of modern entertainment and the younger generation's reduced interest in traditional music forms. Photography, with its ability to capture visual moments and preserve cultural practices, offers an opportunity to document and promote ceremonial drumming. This study examines how photography can be used as a tool for preserving and promoting ceremonial drumming in Shagari LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The rich tradition of ceremonial drumming in Shagari LGA is at risk of fading due to cultural shifts, urbanization, and the prevalence of modern entertainment. While the importance of this practice is widely recognized, its visibility in the broader public sphere remains limited. Photography can serve as a powerful tool to document the rituals, the drummers, and the cultural context of drumming, thereby contributing to the preservation and promotion of this important tradition. However, the role of photography in enhancing the appreciation of ceremonial drumming has not been adequately explored. This study seeks to address this gap.
