Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Kura Local Government Area in Kano State is known for its rich cultural heritage, including a variety of traditional dance forms that have been passed down through generations. These dance forms are not only an expression of cultural identity but also play a role in social gatherings, celebrations, and ceremonies. However, many traditional dance forms are at risk of being forgotten as younger generations are less interested in preserving these cultural practices. Photography can be a powerful tool for documenting these dance forms, capturing their movements, attire, and the social context in which they are performed. This study explores how photography can contribute to the documentation and preservation of local dance forms in Kura LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of traditional dance forms in Kura LGA’s cultural identity, these practices are at risk due to urbanization, changing social norms, and the influence of modern entertainment. Photography offers a way to document and preserve these traditions visually, but there is a lack of comprehensive research on its role in the preservation of local dance forms in the area. This study seeks to explore how photography can be used to safeguard and promote local dance traditions in Kura LGA.

  2. To assess how photography can raise awareness about the cultural significance of local dance forms.
  3. To explore the potential of photography in preserving these dance forms for future generations.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How can photography document traditional dance forms in Kura LGA?
  2. How effective is photography in raising awareness about the cultural significance of these dance forms?
  3. How can photography contribute to the preservation of traditional dance forms in Kura LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Photography is an effective tool for documenting traditional dance forms in Kura LGA.
  2. Photography can raise awareness about the cultural significance of local dance forms.
  3. Photography contributes to the preservation of traditional dance forms in Kura LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it highlights the role of photography in preserving intangible cultural heritage, such as traditional dance. It demonstrates how visual documentation can safeguard cultural practices and raise awareness about their importance. The findings could benefit cultural organizations, policymakers, and local communities working to preserve traditional art forms.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the documentation of traditional dance forms in Kura LGA, Kano State, and explores the role of photography in their preservation. It does not cover other forms of cultural expression, and the study is limited to the documentation of dance through photography.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
