Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Historical monuments serve as tangible representations of a community's cultural heritage, embodying its history, values, and identity. In Bichi Local Government Area of Kano State, these monuments hold significant cultural and historical value, offering insights into the region's rich heritage. However, many of these monuments face threats from neglect, urbanization, and environmental degradation. Photography, as a medium of documentation and preservation, plays a vital role in safeguarding these cultural assets. According to Ahmed and Suleiman (2023), photography provides a visual archive of historical monuments, enabling their preservation for future generations while raising awareness about their significance. Visual documentation through photography also serves as a tool for advocacy, mobilizing support for conservation efforts and fostering a sense of pride and ownership among community members. In Bichi, photography can capture the architectural and cultural essence of historical monuments, ensuring their legacy is not lost to time. This study explores the use of photography in preserving historical monuments in Bichi, emphasizing its role in cultural preservation and heritage advocacy.
