1.1 Background of the Study
Oral traditions, including stories, proverbs, songs, and rituals, form a critical part of the cultural heritage in Nigeria, especially in communities like Pankshin Local Government Area (LGA) in Plateau State. These oral traditions are not just a means of communication but also serve as vessels for preserving history, customs, and indigenous knowledge. However, with modernization and globalization, many of these traditions are at risk of being lost. Photography, often considered a visual form of documentation, can complement oral traditions by capturing and preserving the essence of these cultural expressions. Through photographic documentation, the rich history, rituals, and customs of the Pankshin people can be preserved for future generations. This study aims to explore how photography can be used to document oral traditions, highlighting its significance in cultural preservation and promotion.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Oral traditions in Pankshin, as in many other parts of Nigeria, face the risk of erosion due to the increasing influence of modern communication technologies and cultural shifts. The decline in oral tradition transmission is compounded by the limited resources available for preserving such heritage. While photography has been used in other areas of cultural documentation, its potential to capture oral traditions—through images of performances, storytellers, and rituals—has not been fully explored. This study aims to investigate the influence of photography in documenting oral traditions in Pankshin LGA and how it contributes to cultural preservation efforts.
